The Nature of the Battery and Energy
Battery as a Constant Current Source: The belief that a battery always provides the same amount of current, regardless of what is connected to it. (In reality, it provides a roughly constant voltage).
The “Empty Wires” Misconception: Thinking that wires are empty tubes and the battery “pumps” electrons into them. Students often miss that the wires are already full of electrons.
Batteries Store “Electricity”: The idea that a battery is a tank of electricity, rather than a source of potential difference that moves charges already present in the circuit.
Recharging “Fills” the Battery: The belief that recharging a battery adds new electrons to it, rather than providing energy to reverse a chemical reaction.
Voltage and Current are the Same: Using the terms “voltage,” “current,” and “electricity” interchangeably to describe a general “power” or “stuff” in the wire.
