The Nature of Energy
- Energy as a “Fuel” or “Stuff”: The belief that energy is a physical substance or
a liquid-like “juice” that flows through wires or lives inside batteries, rather than
an abstract mathematical property of a system. - Energy is “Used Up”: The most common misconception; the idea that energy
disappears or is “consumed” when a task is finished, rather than being
dissipated into the surroundings. - Energy and Force are the same: Using the terms interchangeably; not realizing
that force is the mechanism of transfer, while energy is the capacity to do work. - Only “Active” things have energy: The belief that energy only exists in things
that are moving, hot, or making noise. Students often fail to recognize potential
energy in a still object. - Energy is “Created”: The idea that a battery or a person “creates” energy from
nothing when they start moving or working.
