Maya: One branch has hardly any berries, and the other has loads.​
Teacher: What is different or varies between them?​
Leo: The number of berries—few versus many.​
Teacher: If my grandmother was right that lots of berries mean a cold winter, what might the
winters be like in each picture?​
Rina: The branch with many berries would suggest a colder winter than the one with few.
Samantha: Yes maybe suggest? but she could be wrong and there is the opposite or berries
are not affected by cold.

Teacher: What do you notice about the two cars?​
Maya: One is black and one is yellow.​
Teacher: What might be the variables in my son’s comment about car accidents?​
Leo: Car colour and number of accidents.​
Rina: With values like black/yellow and many/few accidents.

Teacher: What do you notice about the

Leo: They vary in size, colour, subject,
and number of pages—many variables
scientists could investigate.
Maya: The all have writing​
