Dialogue 1.1 Finding out what students already know and think.
Teacher Student dialogue in answer to What do scientists do?
Teacher: What do scientists do?
Ava: Do things like experiments?
Teacher: What else might they do?
Ben: They look closely at things and measure them.
Teacher: Why would they measure things carefully?
Clara: So they can compare results and see patterns.
Teacher: What are scientists often trying to find out?
Sam: How different things are connected—how one thing might affect another.
Teacher: What do we call things that can change or differ?
Ava: Umm… things that are not the same?
Teacher: How could we describe them more precisely?
Ben: Maybe things that can go up or down, like amounts?
Teacher: What word do scientists use for things that vary?
Clara: Variables.
Teacher: Why do variables matter?
Sam: Because to understand relationships, you must know exactly what is changing.
Teacher: And what does studying those relationships help scientists do?
Sam: Explain and predict what might happen.
